Panera Bread Appoints Brian Krause as Chief Development Officer to Drive Strategic Expansion

Panera Bread, a leader in the fast-casual dining industry, has announced the appointment of Brian Krause as its new Chief Development Officer, effective January 13. In this pivotal role, Krause will oversee the company’s strategic growth initiatives, including development planning, franchise sales, design and construction, and real estate operations. He will report directly to Interim CEO Paul Carbone, who expressed excitement about the new appointment.

“Brian brings extensive industry expertise in franchise sales and development, and I’m thrilled to welcome him to Panera during this critical time of growth,” said Carbone.

A Seasoned Leader in Franchise Development

Brian Krause joins Panera Bread with an exceptional track record in franchise development and operational leadership. Prior to this role, Krause held prominent positions in some of the industry’s most notable organizations. Most recently, he served at GoTo Foods, where he led growth initiatives for seven iconic brands, including Auntie Anne’s, Jamba, Moe’s Southwest Grill, and Schlotzsky’s. His leadership at GoTo Foods contributed significantly to expanding their market presence and operational footprint.

Krause’s expertise is further highlighted by his tenure as Chief Development Officer at Inspire Brands, where he oversaw franchising, real estate, design, and construction efforts for Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches. Additionally, he has served as Senior Vice President of Franchise Development at Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, where he spearheaded growth strategies across diverse sectors.

Paul Carbone emphasized Krause’s leadership capabilities, stating, “With a simplified operating model and a variety of proven cafe formats, Panera is poised for growth. Brian’s collaborative approach and extensive experience make him the ideal person to accelerate our expansion plans.”

A Strategic Vision for Panera’s Future

Krause’s appointment comes as Panera Bread intensifies its focus on innovation and growth. The company is embracing new cafe formats to adapt to changing consumer needs and unlock opportunities in untapped markets. By diversifying its formats, Panera aims to enhance accessibility while maintaining its signature dining experience.

One of these new concepts is a smaller-format cafe recently launched in Monticello, Minnesota. Designed to prioritize convenience for off-premise and on-the-go customers, this model blends efficiency with the warm, welcoming atmosphere that defines Panera. This approach underscores the brand’s commitment to innovation and its ability to adapt to evolving market trends.

Brian Krause shared his enthusiasm for joining Panera, stating, “Panera Bread is an outstanding restaurant concept, and I’m eager to collaborate with our team members, leadership, and franchise partners to bring Panera to more communities across the country.”
