SunOpta Invests $26 Million To Expand California Plant-Based Beverage Processing Facility

SunOpta, known for its innovative and sustainable approach to food manufacturing, has finished a substantial $26 million expansion at its Modesto, California facility. This marks the second largest project in the company’s history and significantly enhances their capability to produce oatmilk and other plant-based products.

The expansion, which has already commenced operations since its May launch, focuses on an advanced oat extraction production line utilizing proprietary enzymatic processes. This technology breaks down whole oats into a versatile oatbase, enabling the production of oatmilk, plant-based yogurt, and ice cream. With this development, SunOpta anticipates increasing its oatmilk production by over 60%, meeting the rising consumer demand and reinforcing its commitment to plant-based beverage solutions.

Moreover, the expansion has led to the creation of 17 new job opportunities within the Modesto community, bringing total local employment to 208 positions. SunOpta not only supplies liquid and dried oatbase ingredients to a wide range of companies but also manufactures oatmilk for leading brands and food service providers nationwide, alongside producing private label oat-based products for major retailers.

Brian Kocher, CEO of SunOpta, expressed optimism about the expansion, stating, “Through this significant investment in Modesto to expand our oatbase production, we’re well-positioned to meet the growing market demand for plant-based milk and other oat-derived products. We’re proud to contribute positively to the communities where we operate, including bringing new jobs to Modesto.”

Key features of the newly expanded Modesto facility include:

  • 167,684 square feet of production space
  • Creation of 17 new local jobs, totaling 208 positions
  • Anticipated reduction of nearly 800,000 freight miles annually within SunOpta’s network

SunOpta’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond production capacity. Their Modesto location collaborates with Pacific Gas & Electric, Central Valley Ag, and local municipalities to minimize environmental impact, aiming to reduce over 15 million freight miles annually and save 59 million pounds of carbon emissions through their national distribution network.

Looking ahead, SunOpta continues to prioritize sustainability and community partnership, exemplified by plans to install a pollinator habitat at the Modesto facility to commemorate the expansion’s commercial success. This initiative underscores their long-term dedication to environmental stewardship and local engagement.

Joe Gerhardt, Senior Plant Manager, affirmed SunOpta’s commitment to the Central Valley community, stating, “SunOpta is proud to play a leadership role and foster lasting partnerships in the Central Valley, fueling the future of food.”

In summary, SunOpta’s recent expansion in Modesto not only enhances production capabilities but also underscores their commitment to sustainable growth and community enrichment, positioning them as a leader in the evolving plant-based beverage market.
