Therm Solutions, Inc., a leader in food supply chain decarbonization, has unveiled a groundbreaking carbon credit project aimed at reducing food waste directly from grocery stores. This pioneering initiative, listed on Verra’s VCS Registry, will redirect edible food from over 1,300 grocery retail and 18 food distribution locations across seven U.S. states away from landfills and towards donation centers, addressing both climate and food access issues.
The project is projected to generate more than 112,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (mTCO2e) in carbon credits annually by mitigating landfill emissions. These credits incentivize grocery stores to increase their donations of edible food, offering a practical solution to both environmental and humanitarian challenges.
“Decarbonizing the food supply chain by targeting food waste at its source—grocery stores—is a major opportunity for both people and planet,” said Fritz Troller, CEO and co-founder of Therm. “Food waste is a complex problem for the industry, and historically grocers haven’t had a climate-friendly, cost-effective solution. Through carbon credits, Therm empowers grocers to adopt sustainable practices that benefit their operations, the environment, and the American people.”
Food waste remains a critical issue in the U.S., with 38% of the food supply wasted in 2022 while 44.2 million Americans faced hunger. When discarded, this food produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and wastes valuable resources like electricity and water. Addressing food waste is crucial as global resources become increasingly constrained.
Grocery retailers face significant challenges in reducing food loss due to high costs of innovative solutions and fragmented supply chains. Transportation issues, entrenched processes, and logistical challenges have often made discarding food simpler and cheaper than implementing sustainable practices. Carbon credits provide essential incentives for edible food donations, addressing a major gap in the industry while benefiting local communities.
Therm envisions that grocers of all sizes—from small stores to large chains—can contribute to climate solutions. By engaging in food waste reduction activities and adopting climate-friendly refrigerant solutions, these grocers can earn carbon credits, leveling the playing field nationwide. Therm is setting a new industry standard, making environmentally and community-conscious actions a smart business decision.
