Lululemon’s Global Wellbeing Report Reveals the Stress of Maintaining Wellbeing is Impacting People’s Health

Lululemon (NASDAQ: LULU) has released its fourth annual 2024 Global Wellbeing Report, uncovering a paradox in which the growing emphasis on wellbeing is, in fact, causing many to feel less well. While 89% of people are making more effort to enhance their wellbeing than they did a year ago, nearly two-thirds feel overwhelmed by societal expectations to maintain it in specific ways. This pressure has resulted in “wellbeing burnout” for almost half of the respondents.

“We are excited to share new insights into global wellbeing,” said Calvin McDonald, CEO of lululemon. “Our goal is to spark meaningful conversations and inspire people to reflect on their own wellbeing journeys. The data indicates that moving with others and fostering a sense of community can positively affect how people feel. We look forward to bringing our guests and communities together worldwide to support one another throughout the year.”

Despite this continued focus on wellbeing, the report’s Wellbeing Index Scores—tracking physical, mental, and social wellbeing—have stagnated globally over the past four years. This highlights a need for a more effective approach to improving wellbeing. Key findings reveal the top sources of pressure driving the wellbeing paradox:

  • 61% feel overwhelmed by societal expectations to appear well.
  • 53% say there’s conflicting information on how to best improve wellbeing.
  • 89% of those experiencing “wellbeing burnout” cite loneliness as a contributing factor.

The report offers three strategies to break free from “wellbeing burnout”:

  1. Quiet the noise – Emphasize mindfulness, take breaks from social media, and establish boundaries. Those who meditate report 12% higher wellbeing.
  2. Do what feels good – Move your body throughout the day, spend time in nature, and set your own pace. People who engage in regular movement report 16% higher wellbeing.
  3. Connect with others – Socialize through physical activity, whether it’s working out with friends or participating in team sports. Those who use physical activity to connect with others report 23% higher wellbeing.

“Often, the pressure to improve our wellbeing leads to overthinking and fixating on what we lack,” said Dr. Murali Doraiswamy, professor at Duke University and lululemon Mental Wellbeing Global Advisory Board member. “Setting achievable goals and turning wellbeing into a joyful pursuit rather than a source of stress can make a significant difference.”

The data also suggests that combining community engagement with movement can help break the cycle of wellbeing burnout. Simply moving with others can foster a sense of purpose, strengthen community ties, and improve overall wellbeing by 16%.

Lululemon, a brand rooted in movement and community, has committed $3.1M USD to mental health initiatives, partnering with United for Global Mental Health, The Global Coalition for Youth Mental Health led by UNICEF, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to support the intersection of movement and mental health globally.

“People are discussing mental health more than ever, and it’s critical that societies unite to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and increase mental health support,” said Sarah Kline, CEO of United for Global Mental Health. “With lululemon’s partnership, we will continue advocating for physical activity as a tool to support mental health, recognizing the powerful connection between the two.”

In honor of World Mental Health Day, lululemon is launching a series of global, movement-based community events from October 7–12, offering free activities aimed at improving wellbeing. More information on these initiatives can be found on lululemon’s website.
