Whitman Facility Marks 60 Years of Craftsmanship for Estée Lauder

The Estée Lauder Companies has announced a major investment in its UK manufacturing network as its Whitman facility celebrates 60 years of operations. The move reinforces the company’s commitment to British craftsmanship, innovation, and the growing prestige fragrance market while strengthening its long-term manufacturing capabilities in the United Kingdom.

Established in 1966, the Whitman manufacturing facility has become a key part of The Estée Lauder Companies’ global production network. The site manufactures skincare and fragrance products for several of the company’s iconic brands, including Jo Malone London, Estée Lauder, Clinique, and La Mer. Today, Whitman produces more than 90 million units annually, supplying markets across the UK, Europe, and selected regions worldwide.

Speaking on the milestone anniversary, William P. Lauder, Chair of the Board of Directors of The Estée Lauder Companies, highlighted the importance of the facility and the company’s longstanding connection to British manufacturing expertise.

“For sixty years, Whitman has reflected the craftsmanship, quality, and innovation that have defined The Estée Lauder Companies since my grandparents founded the business,” said Lauder. “When my family established our manufacturing footprint here in 1966, we recognized the remarkable depth of British artisanal skill, and we are proud to continue investing in that legacy today.”

As part of its latest investment strategy, the company will integrate selected luxury candle and home fragrance manufacturing capabilities from Contract Candles, a long-standing partner known for producing luxury candles and scent diffusers. The transition includes assuming the lease of one of Contract Candles’ two UK facilities, welcoming approximately 50 employees into The Estée Lauder Companies over time, and expanding research, development, and quality assurance capabilities.

The integration represents a significant step in enhancing the company’s fragrance manufacturing operations. Once completed, the UK will serve as the primary global manufacturing hub for candles across The Estée Lauder Companies’ prestige brand portfolio, including Jo Malone London, TOM FORD, and AERIN. The move is expected to strengthen operational resilience, improve manufacturing control, and support long-term growth in the luxury home fragrance category.

Roberto Canevari, Executive Vice President and Chief Value Chain Officer at The Estée Lauder Companies, emphasized the strategic importance of the investment.

“The UK plays a significant role in our global manufacturing network, and this investment in candle and home fragrance manufacturing reflects our continued commitment to British craftsmanship and innovation,” said Canevari. “Bringing these activities more closely into our manufacturing network will strengthen resilience and support our ability to continue delivering the exceptional quality and artistry that define our brands.”

The announcement comes as consumer demand for premium home fragrance products continues to rise globally. Home fragrance has become an increasingly important growth category across The Estée Lauder Companies’ fragrance portfolio, driven by consumer interest in creating elevated and personalized living spaces.

Jo Malone London, one of the company’s flagship fragrance brands, remains a standout performer in the category. The British luxury brand currently holds the leading position in the UK luxury home fragrance market across home scents and fragrance-related products. Its signature candles, crafted in the UK, have become synonymous with quality, elegance, and artisanal craftsmanship.

The latest investment further strengthens the company’s manufacturing ecosystem while reinforcing the UK’s position as a center of excellence for fragrance innovation and production. It also aligns with The Estée Lauder Companies’ broader strategy of building a more resilient and efficient global supply chain capable of supporting future growth.

Since fiscal year 2020, The Estée Lauder Companies has invested approximately $72 million in the Whitman facility. These investments have supported automation projects, advanced manufacturing technologies, quality improvements, sustainability initiatives, and workforce development programs. The company has also expanded apprenticeship opportunities and STEM outreach efforts through partnerships with local universities.

As Whitman enters its seventh decade of operation, the latest investment underscores The Estée Lauder Companies’ confidence in UK manufacturing and its commitment to preserving the craftsmanship and innovation that have helped shape its global success.
