HelloFresh and Denali Save 4 Million Pounds of Food Waste from Phoenix Landfills

Denali and HelloFresh Divert 4 Million Pounds of Food Waste from Phoenix Landfills

Denali, the largest full-service recycler of organics in the U.S., and HelloFresh, the leading meal kit provider, have reached an important environmental milestone by repurposing nearly 4 million pounds of food waste in Phoenix. This collaboration turns food waste into valuable products like compost and animal feed, promoting a circular economy and reintegrating these materials back into agriculture. Together, they are addressing climate change by diverting food waste from landfills, a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.

“Denali is proud to partner with HelloFresh in Arizona, showcasing how we can revolutionize food recycling for the benefit of communities and the planet,” says Ilia Kostov, Chief Revenue Officer at Denali.

This innovative food waste diversion program began in 2023, focusing on recycling pre-consumer food waste from HelloFresh’s facilities in Goodyear and Phoenix. Logistics are managed by Innovative Waste Recycling (IWR), a national waste management company that specializes in sustainable solutions. Denali’s depackaging machines efficiently separate food waste from non-recyclables. Utilizing its network of local facilities, Denali converts this food waste into compost for farms and gardens, and animal feed for local farmers.

By year-end, Denali, HelloFresh, and IWR will have diverted 4 million pounds of food waste from Phoenix landfills, preventing an estimated 1,307 tons of CO2 emissions—equivalent to driving over 1.5 million miles in an average gasoline vehicle.

“At HelloFresh, we aim to create a more sustainable food system,” said Jeff Yorzyk, Senior Director of Sustainability for HelloFresh North America. “Denali helps us repurpose inedible food into animal feed and compost for gardens across Arizona. We are committed to further reducing food waste at all our U.S. processing centers and appreciate our partnerships with IWR and Denali in achieving these goals.”

Denali’s advanced machinery simplifies the separation of cardboard, plastic, and other packaging from food, handling what was once a labor-intensive process. This includes food scraps from produce, dairy, bread, and ingredients nearing expiration that cannot be included in HelloFresh meal kits.

The clean stream of organics is then combined with green waste like lawn clippings and tree limbs to produce over 20,000 tons of nutrient-rich compost annually in Phoenix—enough to fill one million one-cubic-foot retail bags of soil.

“HelloFresh is a trailblazer in transforming the food supply chain with its sustainable practices and commitment to reducing food waste,” says Kostov. “Our partnership exemplifies how we can revolutionize the recycling of inedible food for the benefit of both communities and the environment.”

Denali’s operational scale allows the company to efficiently recycle organic waste from HelloFresh’s production centers in the Phoenix area. Consumers can purchase compost made from the recycled food scraps at local stores.
