Origin Materials and Reed City Group Launch North American Mass Production Partnership for PET Caps and Closures

Origin Materials (“Origin”) (NASDAQ: ORGN, ORGNW), a leading technology company dedicated to enabling the world’s transition to sustainable materials, has partnered with Reed City Group, a full-service injection mold builder, injection molder, hydraulic press manufacturer, and automation solutions provider, to mass produce PET caps and closures in North America.

The partnership will see the installation and operation of Origin’s PET cap and closure manufacturing lines at Reed City Group’s facilities in Michigan. These lines will utilize high-speed equipment and automation to convert virgin and recycled PET into caps, marking the first commercially viable PET closures to be mass-produced for the North American market.

“Together with Reed City Group, we anticipate beginning mass production of PET caps for North America later this year,” said John Bissell, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Origin. “We’re excited to collaborate with Reed City Group’s talented team, which includes over 200 skilled machinists, mechanical engineers, and operations professionals, known for their expertise in tool making and clean room manufacturing.”

Bissell added, “This partnership with Reed City Group supports our geographic expansion, complementing our previously announced mass production capabilities in Europe. We’re thrilled to welcome Reed City Group to our PET cap manufacturing ecosystem.”

Guy Boitos, CEO of Reed City Group, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Our company is deeply committed to innovation, and this partnership with Origin aligns perfectly with our mission to meet the market’s demand for sustainable products. We’re eager to work with Origin on this transformative project in the years ahead.”

Origin’s PET caps and closures represent a significant advancement in packaging, offering enhanced recyclability, including cap tethering, light-weighting, and extended product shelf-life. These solutions address a market valued at over $65 billion. With partners like Reed City Group, Origin is tackling some of the most challenging sustainability issues, in line with its mission to transition the world to sustainable materials.

Origin’s PCO 1881-compatible caps, which can be produced using virgin or recycled PET, will be available starting in Q4 2024, with PCO 1881-compatible tethered caps and other cap types to follow.
