Walmart, joined by associates, local officials, and community members, celebrated the grand opening of its new 730,000 square-foot perishable distribution center (PDC) in Lancaster. Located just 15 miles south of Dallas, this state-of-the-art facility will manage and deliver fresh produce, dairy, eggs, flowers, and frozen goods to nearby Walmart stores. It marks Walmart’s second advanced facility in Lancaster, following the new fulfillment center launched in 2023.
Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price highlighted the significance of the new facility, stating, “South Dallas County is now home to two of Walmart’s latest high-tech centers. Walmart’s investment underscores that Dallas County and the Dallas-Fort Worth region are thriving business hubs.”
The Lancaster PDC is one of five new high-tech perishable distribution centers Walmart is introducing. This facility features cutting-edge technology that allows it to handle over twice the volume of a traditional distribution center, ensuring faster replenishment of store shelves. The advanced systems help create optimal pallets for delicate items like eggs and yogurt, significantly reducing manual handling and maximizing truck space. This efficiency not only lowers transportation costs but also translates into savings for customers.
Lancaster Mayor Clyde C. Hairston praised the center’s impact, noting, “This facility is a game-changer, merging our skilled workforce with innovative technology to deliver top-quality food. It will also provide sustainable job opportunities and improve access to nutritious food.”
The new center, located at 940 East Pleasant Run Road, employs over 500 full-time associates and is creating additional career opportunities, including roles focused on advanced robotics technology. Tim Cooper, Senior Vice President of Grocery Network Operations for Walmart U.S., emphasized, “This investment represents our commitment to our associates, community, and future.”
Walmart is actively hiring for tech-focused roles, such as Automation Equipment Operators, with opportunities for career growth. Full-time positions come with comprehensive benefits, including medical, vision, and dental insurance, 401(k) matching, paid time off, a stock purchase plan, and a tuition-paid college degree through Walmart’s Live Better U program. At the grand opening, Walmart also donated $5,000 to ConqHer and $2,500 each to the Lancaster Police and Fire Departments, reflecting its commitment to the local community. In fiscal year 2024, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation contributed over $159 million to Texas nonprofits.
Walmart operates 590 retail units in Texas and supports the local economy with $100.8 billion in supplier spending, sustaining over 300,000 supplier jobs.
