SUPIMA Reveals 17th Annual Design Competition, Hosted by Phillip Lim

SUPIMA, the non-profit organization dedicated to championing American-grown Pima cotton, is excited to announce the return of the SUPIMA Design Competition for 2024. This year’s event will be hosted by the esteemed fashion designer Phillip Lim, Creative Director and Co-Founder of 3.1 Phillip Lim. As 3.1 Phillip Lim celebrates its 20th anniversary, Lim’s experience and influence make him an ideal host for this year’s competition. The runway show will take place during New York Fashion Week on Thursday, September 5th at 1 PM, featuring collections from prominent brands and designers from around the world.

“We are delighted to have Phillip Lim host this year’s competition as he marks the 20th anniversary of 3.1 Phillip Lim. We’re also celebrating a decade of collaboration with Bibhu Mohapatra, whose mentorship has been invaluable to our finalists. Each year, the competition brings fresh excitement, and we look forward to showcasing the exceptional talent of this year’s finalists,” says Buxton Midyette, VP of Marketing and Promotions at SUPIMA.

The SUPIMA Design Competition supports emerging designers by spotlighting top graduates from leading design universities across the country. Finalists participate in a comprehensive mentorship program through SUPIMA, culminating in a showcase of eveningwear collections made from SUPIMA cotton, America’s premier luxury cotton. The winner of the competition will receive a $10,000 prize, providing a significant boost to their career in fashion.

Phillip Lim will serve as the MC for the runway show, which will feature a distinguished panel of 17 judges including industry veterans, editors, stylists, and consultants. This year’s panel includes Aaron Royce, Abby Silverman, Alexandra Pijut, Avril Graham, Cipriana Quann, Danya Issawi, Emma Davidson, Fern Mallis, Freya Drohan, Gilles Denis, Godfrey Deeny, Jérôme Lamaar, Kelly Augustine, Lisa Lockwood, Mandy Lee, Mickey Boardman, Shibon Kennedy, and Violet Conroy.

“Supporting emerging talent is crucial. As I approach the 20th anniversary of 3.1 Phillip Lim, I reflect on how quickly time passes. It’s an honor to guide new designers, and my advice is to take your time, trust your instincts, build your community, and find joy in the journey,” says Phillip Lim.

The six finalists will present their designs during the NYFW runway show, where the winner will be announced live. A video of the show will be available on SUPIMA’s website afterward.

Bibhu Mohapatra, the CFDA Award-winning eveningwear designer, continues his role as mentor for the SUPIMA Design Competition, celebrating his tenth year of providing invaluable support and insight to the finalists.
