HanesBrands Celebrates 15 Years of Hanes for Good, Donating 6 Million Apparel Items to the Unhoused

HanesBrands Inc., a leader in sustainable apparel, is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its Hanes for Good program. Launched in 2009, the initiative has donated over 6 million items, including 4 million pairs of socks, to people experiencing homelessness across the United States, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C., and Guam. Originally addressing the shortage of socks in homeless shelters, the program has expanded to include essential items such as t-shirts, underwear, sweats, and period underwear, with a goal of positively impacting 10 million people by 2030.

Hanes for Good’s impact includes its contributions to disaster relief efforts, with recent donations of over 20,000 items to areas affected by hurricanes in 2024 and 9,000 pairs of women’s period underwear for Period Action Day. The program’s reach has grown significantly, with over 485 partner organizations working to help those in need.

“Small gestures—like a new pair of socks or a fresh t-shirt—can make a big difference,” said Kelsey Leetzow, Hanes Brand Marketing Manager. Hanes for Good has also marked milestones like the Guinness World Record for the longest sock line, created by a donation of 21,500 socks in 2021.

Randall Hitt, Vice President of Unsheltered Services at Roof Above, highlighted the importance of these donations: “For some people experiencing homelessness, their feet are their only reliable source of transportation. The comfort of a new pair of socks can have such a positive impact as they navigate their journey forward.”
