Believer Meats and GEA Partner to Scale Up Cultivated Meat Production

Believer Meats, a leader in the cultivated meat industry, has entered into a strategic partnership with GEA, one of the largest global suppliers of production-scale equipment and systems for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical sectors. This collaboration aims to co-develop technologies and processes to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of cultivated meat production.

The companies will work together to optimize production methods for cultivated meat, starting with chicken and expanding to other products. The partnership will focus on advancements in bioreactor technology, perfusion systems, and media rejuvenation while also reducing environmental impact through initiatives like optimized water and power usage and waste stream utilization. The ultimate goal is to lower production costs and streamline operations, making cultivated meat more affordable and accessible.

Believer Meats CEO, Gustavo Burger, emphasized the significance of the partnership: “By partnering with GEA, we are innovating the technology and process engineering capabilities needed to scale cultivated meat production efficiently and sustainably. We are excited to take this next step in our journey.”

GEA CEO, Stefan Klebert, highlighted the importance of feeding a growing global population: “We share Believer’s vision that cell cultivation technology is key to making safe, healthy meat widely available and affordable. This partnership aligns with our mission of ‘Engineering for a better world.'”

Together, Believer Meats and GEA aim to strengthen the cultivated meat ecosystem and explore joint commercial ventures to accelerate the industry’s global growth. Believer is currently building the world’s largest cultivated meat production facility in Wilson, N.C., which will feature a cutting-edge innovation center and is expected to be operational by 2025. The facility will have the capacity to produce 12,000 metric tons of cultivated chicken annually without the need for animal slaughter.

As part of the partnership, GEA will develop proprietary bioreactors for Believer’s cell-cultivation technology, focusing on achieving high cell densities and yields. The collaboration will also enhance Believer’s perfusion and media rejuvenation processes, optimizing resource use and reducing costs.
