Walgreens Launches Store Brand Naloxone Online and In Stores This Month
Walgreens is expanding access to life-saving medication by introducing its own brand of naloxone. This medication, crucial for reversing the effects of an opioid overdose when administered promptly, will be available both online and in stores starting this month.
Walgreens Launches Affordable Naloxone Nasal Spray to Enhance Access to Life-Saving Medication
Walgreens announced the launch of Walgreens Brand Naloxone HCI Nasal Spray, an over-the-counter medication designed to reverse opioid overdoses. Retailing at $34.99, this new product is priced lower than the comparable national brand available at Walgreens stores. It is currently available online and will be stocked in all stores nationwide by the end of the month, located in the pain relief aisle. This initiative aims to provide a critical access point for the nearly 10 million customers and patients Walgreens serves daily across local communities in the U.S.
Walgreens Brand Naloxone HCI Nasal Spray is effective in temporarily reversing the effects of opioids—such as heroin, illicit fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications—if administered promptly during an overdose.
As a leading healthcare services company rooted in a retail pharmacy footprint, Walgreens is committed to removing barriers to naloxone access,” said Dr. Priya Mammen, senior medical director in the Walgreens Office of Clinical Integrity. “As an emergency physician, I have for years combatted the devastating impacts of the opioid overdose epidemic and worked tirelessly to save lives. Expanding access to naloxone is a critical step in empowering individuals, families, and communities to act and be part of the solution. We must all confront this crisis head-on to bring change.
Naloxone works by quickly blocking the effects of opioids on the brain, restoring normal breathing, and preventing death due to overdose. Despite its proven efficacy, access to naloxone remains limited in many communities, exacerbating the opioid epidemic’s toll. Walgreens is offering naloxone at a lower price than the comparable national brand product to further enable access to this life-saving medication. This launch follows approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
