SUPIMA Unveils 17th Annual Design Competition, Hosted by Phillip Lim

SUPIMA, the non-profit luxury brand promoting American-grown Pima cotton, is excited to announce the return of the SUPIMA Design Competition for 2024. This year’s event will be hosted by renowned fashion designer Phillip Lim, Creative Director and Co-Founder of 3.1 Phillip Lim, as the brand celebrates its 20th anniversary. The competition will take place during New York Fashion Week on Thursday, September 5th, at 1 PM, where prominent U.S. and international designers will showcase their seasonal collections.

“I am thrilled to have an icon like Phillip Lim host this year’s competition as he celebrates the 20th anniversary of 3.1 Phillip Lim. We’re also marking a decade of collaboration with Bibhu Mohapatra as a mentor, whose contributions have been transformative for our finalists. After 17 years, each competition brings new excitement. We have a remarkable group of finalists this year, and I can’t wait to see their creations,” said Buxton Midyette, VP of Marketing and Promotions at SUPIMA.

The SUPIMA Design Competition highlights emerging fashion talent, selecting top graduates from leading U.S. design schools. Finalists participate in a months-long mentorship program, culminating in the presentation of their eveningwear capsule collections, crafted exclusively from SUPIMA cotton. The 17th annual competition provides these young designers with exposure and a chance to win a $10,000 prize to help launch their careers.

Lim will emcee the runway show, joined by a panel of 17 distinguished judges, including industry veterans, tastemakers, and editors such as Aaron Royce, Abby Silverman, Alexandra Pijut, Avril Graham, and Fern Mallis, among others.

“Supporting the next generation of designers is essential,” said Phillip Lim. “As I approach 20 years with 3.1 Phillip Lim, it’s a privilege to share my experience with emerging talent. My advice: take your time, trust your instincts, build your community, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.”

Six finalists will showcase their designs at the NYFW presentation, with the winner announced live at the show. A video of the event will also be available on SUPIMA’s website.

Celebrating his 10th year as a mentor for the competition, CFDA Award-winning designer Bibhu Mohapatra will once again guide the finalists, offering invaluable insights and support throughout the program.

The 2024 finalists are:

  • Marina Lamphier | Drexel University
  • Mina Piao | Fashion Institute of Technology
  • Lizzy Truitt | Kent State University
  • Emma Joan Foley | Parsons School of Design, The New School
  • Henry Hawk | Rhode Island School of Design
