For over a century, the Nalle family has woven their dreams into the fabric of Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley. This month marks a significant milestone as they celebrate four decades of crafting estate old-vine Zinfandel and small-lot wines at their historic property, now under the stewardship of the next generation.
In 1984, founder and winemaker emeritus Doug Nalle faced skepticism when he established the winery, focusing on Red Zinfandel amidst the popularity of sweeter White Zinfandel. Undeterred, Doug envisioned greatness in the historic benchland Zinfandel vineyard owned by his wife Lee’s family. He built an above-ground cave with a living roof of rosemary, pioneering naturally temperature-controlled winemaking and cellar operations.
“It’s been a journey filled with luck and unwavering support from Lee, our family, and friends. Now, after 40 vintages, Nalle wines shine brighter than ever, thanks to the dedication of our son Andrew and his wife April,” Doug shared. “Lee and I are thrilled to witness their innovative approach to grape growing and winemaking come to fruition, producing wines we love.”
Lee, deeply rooted in Dry Creek Valley, reflects on her gratitude to her Henderlong ancestors for this opportunity. “I’m thankful for the chance to live and work in this stunning valley. Meeting Doug fifty years ago changed everything—he showed me a profound appreciation for winemaking and Healdsburg,” she remarked. “Together, we’ve honored this land, guided by love, making all the difference.”
Andrew and his brother Sam began their journey early, assisting with harvests and cellar duties. Today, Andrew and April manage the winery, alongside their children Lena, Drew, and Ruby.
While Nalle Winery produces a variety of wines, their signature remains their Zinfandel. “Our Zinfandel embodies bright fruit, a rounded mouthfeel, balanced structure, and a nod to our Dry Creek Valley terroir,” Andrew explained. “While trends come and go, we’ve remained steadfast, committed to our distinctive style.”
The Nalle tasting room welcomes visitors on Fridays and Saturdays, with reservations recommended. Explore more about their property, family, and wines at www.nallewinery.com.
