Lowe’s Volunteers Set Record with 1,000-Bed Build for Children in Need

A team of 1,000 Lowe’s red vest volunteers gathered at the company’s corporate office, hammers in hand, to achieve a record-breaking build of 1,000 beds for children in need. This initiative was conducted in partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a non-profit collaborator of Lowe’s.

Chad Sanders, VP of Lumber and a board member of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, was present all day to ensure the volunteers successfully reached their record-breaking goal.

Nationwide, 2%-3% of children lack a bed. Twelve years ago, Luke Mickelson, Founder and Head of Development at Sleep in Heavenly Peace, recognized this need and made it his personal mission to reduce that number to zero.

“Providing a bed for a child means so much to them. They perform better in school, develop a more positive outlook on life, and can have friends over for sleepovers. We always tell people that we provide more than just a bed—it’s a change that enhances family life.”

Luke Mickelson, the Founder and Head of Development at Sleep in Heavenly Peace, has witnessed remarkable strides in the mission to provide every child in America with a bed, particularly following the partnership with Lowe’s. Reflecting on the past, Luke recalls constructing 22 beds over a three-week period in his own garage twelve years ago. Fast forward to May 2024, and the scene has dramatically evolved: in the parking garage of Lowe’s corporate campus, the production of beds has skyrocketed to 200 times that amount in just one day.

It’s an incredibly surreal experience to see a thousand strangers gathered here today, all sharing the same passion I had 12 years ago, and still maintain, for ensuring that children have comfortable nights’ sleep.

While this 1,000-bed building event marks a significant milestone for both Sleep in Heavenly Peace and Lowe’s, it is destined to become merely a benchmark in their ongoing collaboration. The partnership aims to construct 2,000 beds this year through Lowe’s Foundation Swing for Charity events. These numbers hold even greater significance when one considers the many children in need who will soon find solace in them.
