Grove Collaborative Unveils Spring Limited Edition with The 5 Gyres Institute

Grove Collaborative Holdings, a pioneer in sustainable consumer products and the world’s first plastic-neutral retailer, has unveiled its Grove Co. Spring Limited Edition Collection in collaboration with The 5 Gyres Institute. As a certified B Corporation and Public Benefit Corporation, Grove remains committed to sustainability, and this latest collection reflects its ongoing efforts to reduce plastic pollution while celebrating the natural beauty of our oceans through innovative fragrance and design.

Since 2019, The 5 Gyres Institute has been Grove’s nonprofit partner in plastics research and advocacy. This new collection strengthens their partnership by incorporating sustainability into every aspect of product design while supporting 5 Gyres’ mission to address the global health crisis of plastic pollution. The collection not only raises awareness about ocean conservation but also reinforces the importance of sustainable packaging and healthier ingredients.

A Partnership for a Plastic-Free Future

“Grove Co.’s support over the last six years has been integral in pushing forward our mission to drive innovative solutions to plastic pollution,” said Sara Mais, Development Director at 5 Gyres. “We are proud to collaborate with a company that is revolutionizing the consumer goods sector and proving that we can all take steps toward a plastic-free future. The 5 Gyres collection brings sustainable solutions into homes across the U.S., showcasing the effectiveness of reuse and refill systems and ensuring that consumers have access to safe, plastic-free products.”

Founded in 2009 by Anna Cummins and Dr. Marcus Eriksen, 5 Gyres is dedicated to scientific research, policy advocacy, and community engagement to combat plastic pollution. The organization pioneered the first-ever Global Estimate of Marine Plastic Pollution, highlighting the alarming presence of microplastics in the world’s oceans. With Grove’s support, 5 Gyres has published 19 research papers and engaged in advocacy efforts for over 220 legislative bills. Grove has contributed more than $100,000 toward these initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.

“At Grove, we believe the most significant impact we can make is by eliminating single-use plastic in our homes,” said Jenn Pann, VP of Merchandising & E-Commerce at Grove. “By switching to recyclable, refillable, and reusable options, consumers can take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable lifestyle. We’re proud to partner with 5 Gyres on this collection that not only honors our oceans but also educates consumers on the dual environmental and human health crises caused by plastic pollution.”

The Growing Microplastics Crisis

While plastic pollution has been widely acknowledged as an environmental issue, the increasing prevalence of microplastics presents a significant human health concern. Microplastics, formed as plastics degrade in oceans and other natural environments, have been found throughout the human body, raising serious concerns about long-term health impacts. Key research findings include:

  • The U.S. alone landfills approximately 27 million tons of plastic packaging annually, while only 5% of plastic waste is effectively recycled.
  • Over 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the oceans each year, threatening marine life and ecosystems. If no action is taken, plastic pollution could increase to 53 million metric tons annually by 2030.
  • Microplastics have been discovered in human breast milk, the placenta, blood, and even the brain, leading researchers to investigate their potential health risks.
  • Plastics contain over 10,000 different chemicals, many of which have been linked to serious diseases such as diabetes and cancer.

Grove and 5 Gyres are committed to tackling these challenges by providing consumers with sustainable alternatives to plastic-heavy household products. Their collaborative efforts aim to make sustainable living more accessible and convenient for everyone.

Celebrating Our Oceans Through Fragrance & Design

The Grove Co. Spring Limited Edition Collection draws inspiration from America’s diverse coastal landscapes. Featuring two fresh, natural-origin fragrances, the collection encapsulates the essence of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts through scent and design.

  • Atlantic Dune Grass evokes windswept coastal dunes with a refreshing blend of marram grass, stargazer lily, fresh lemon, and seaside cypress.
  • Pacific Primrose transports users to a lush seaside meadow, combining delicate florals with hints of cool moss and sheer amber.

The collection includes essential home and personal care products such as dish soap, hand soap, room sprays, laundry detergent sheets, and household cleaners. To minimize environmental impact, these products are packaged in sustainable materials, including infinitely recyclable aluminum and glass bottles, as well as recycled and recyclable paper packaging—completely eliminating single-use plastics.

Art Meets Sustainability

To bring the collection’s oceanic theme to life, Grove Co. partnered with acclaimed pattern designer Amy MacCready. Known for her intricate and nature-inspired designs, MacCready’s artwork reflects the beauty of coastal ecosystems, incorporating elements like marshland plants, coastal wildlife, and weather patterns. Her designs are featured across Grove Co.’s sustainable packaging, reinforcing the brand’s dedication to environmental responsibility.

A Scalable Model for Sustainable Consumer Goods

With growing consumer demand for eco-friendly packaging and stricter regulations on plastic use, the partnership between Grove Collaborative and The 5 Gyres Institute serves as a replicable model for businesses seeking to balance sustainability with operational efficiency. By integrating sustainability into product development, Grove is not only reducing plastic waste but also strengthening consumer trust in environmentally responsible brands.

Through this partnership and its Beyond Plastic™ initiative, Grove continues to lead the movement toward a plastic-free future. By offering innovative, plastic-free alternatives for everyday essentials, the company is empowering consumers to make conscious choices that benefit both the planet and their well-being.
