Embrace Sustainability, Reap Rewards $50,000 Funding for Children to Champion Environmental Care

Woolworths in Aotearoa is once again extending an invitation to young environmental enthusiasts to showcase their most innovative ideas for environmental stewardship through the annual Growing for Good grant program, now entering its sixth year. Encouraging schools and students to unveil their most imaginative environmental initiatives, the program seeks to empower young leaders to translate their environmental passion into tangible action.

This year, a grant pool of $50,000 awaits, with each winning project eligible to receive $10,000 in funding. Over the past year, the program has witnessed the realization of remarkable projects, yielding impressive outcomes. One such example is Nelson Intermediate, a recipient from last year, which recognized the necessity for rainwater tanks to sustain its gardens, fruit trees, and native flora during periods when students were not available. By installing these tanks, students ensured sustainable irrigation for the school’s vegetation, even during dry summers and school breaks.

Sarah Johns, the STEAM Leader at Nelson Intermediate School, reflected on the progress made since securing the grant, highlighting the heightened awareness among students regarding the impending water scarcity in their community. Securing the grant enabled them to proactively address unpredictable weather patterns in Nelson.

“To enhance the sustainability and resilience of our school’s productive areas, we have implemented a series of rainwater tanks to capture water from the sky. This initiative has facilitated our students’ understanding of the significance of conserving natural resources. We are delighted with the outcomes of this project!” she remarked.

Millie Moketapu, a student involved in the project, emphasized the newfound access to water during scarcity, enabling the growth of native plants and vegetable gardens to provide sustenance for the community throughout the year.

Mount Albert Grammar School is another success story, utilizing their grant to construct a vertical garden project, enabling students to supply produce grown to its food technology classes.

Catherine Langabeer, Head of Sustainability at Woolworths New Zealand, commended the ingenuity and dedication displayed by young Kiwis participating in the program, finding their endeavors impressive and inspiring.

The past five years of Growing for Good have showcased the determination and creativity of our tamariki in enhancing their communities and the environment. As we kick off applications for the sixth year, I eagerly anticipate witnessing the innovative projects in store,” Langabeer expressed.

Applications are now open to primary, intermediate, secondary schools, and ECEs across Aotearoa until Sunday, June 2, 2024
