E-commerce & AI Brief TikTok’s Legal Challenge in the US, Amazon’s Expansion in South Africa

TikTok’s Legal Battle in the US Intensifies
Amidst the looming threat of a nationwide ban on TikTok, ByteDance’s alternative lifestyle app, Lemon8, has been making waves in the US. Dubbed as a fusion of Pinterest and Instagram, Lemon8 has surpassed notable platforms like Pinterest and Tinder to claim the title of the most downloaded lifestyle app in the US Apple App Store since April 7. While on Google Play, it has consistently ranked between 10th and 19th over the past month, trailing behind Pinterest and Amazon’s Alexa.

In response to the potential ban, TikTok has taken legal action against the US government. On May 7, the company filed a lawsuit, contending that the “ban or sell” legislation violates First Amendment rights and poses a threat to small and medium-sized businesses reliant on the platform. TikTok has characterized the law as extreme and unconstitutional, warning that it could force the platform to cease operations by January 19, 2025. To address concerns regarding data security, TikTok has invested billions and drafted a comprehensive 90-page national security proposal.
