Shopping online should be convenient, but a recent survey conducted by Software Advice indicates that consumers are facing increasing challenges due to decision fatigue. The survey, which polled over 5,500 global consumers, highlights that navigating through vast search results, ineffective filters, and unreliable reviews is making it harder for shoppers to find products that meet their needs.

Today’s online shoppers encounter a unique predicament. Despite advancements in AI promising to simplify the process, they are often overwhelmed by an abundance of products. A majority of global consumers initiate their product searches on retailer websites (52%), search engines (67%), or ecommerce marketplaces (46%). However, instead of finding helpful suggestions, they are inundated with irrelevant, inaccurate, or sponsored listings that contribute to frustration and decision fatigue.

Molly Burke, Senior Retail Analyst at Software Advice, comments, “The abundance of choices creates a frustrating experience that leads to decision fatigue, prompting many shoppers to abandon their carts or avoid ecommerce platforms with subpar search functionalities.”

The Impact of Filters on User Experience

Search filters are intended to assist shoppers in narrowing down their options, and a significant 77% of consumers rely on them regularly. However, the survey reveals substantial issues with their effectiveness. Many users find that filters are frequently misapplied to products (45%), lack sufficient specificity (44%), or fail to adequately narrow down selections (34%).

Building Consumer Confidence with Reviews

Consumers invest considerable time scrutinizing product reviews to ensure their authenticity and usefulness. Despite the critical role reviews play in purchase decisions (second only to price), the effort involved in finding reliable reviews adds to decision fatigue. Notably, only 34% of respondents trust reviews from social media influencers, underscoring the importance of authentic customer feedback.

Burke advises retailers to “enhance discoverability on search engines and improve internal search functionalities to better match customers with products they genuinely desire. Simplifying review processes can influence purchase decisions and reduce costly returns.”

Bridging Social Media Influence with Ecommerce

Social media significantly influences consumer purchasing behaviors, with 30% of shoppers beginning their product searches on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. However, while social media trends inspire purchases, most consumers finalize transactions on ecommerce platforms. Unfortunately, many retailers fail to integrate trending social media keywords into their website search functionalities and product information, leaving consumers to make connections independently.

Retailers can improve the online shopping experience by adopting advanced search technologies and robust review management systems. Implementing faceted search options and AI-driven review summaries can significantly alleviate decision fatigue. These tools enable consumers to quickly find what they need, thereby reducing frustration and increasing conversion rates.
