Albertsons Foundation Teams Up with Nonprofits to Fight Child Hunger The Albertsons Companies Foundation has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to combat childhood hunger this summer, uniting with leading nonprofit organizations. This collaboration aims to promote and enhance participation in the Department of Health’s Summer EBT Children’s Electronic Benefit Transfer (Summer EBT) Program, also known as SUN Bucks. Christy Duncan Anderson, President and CEO of the Albertsons Companies Foundation, emphasized the necessity of collective action in addressing childhood hunger. The Summer EBT program, spanning 37 states, five U.S. territories, and two tribes, will provide grocery benefits to low-income families during summer break, filling the gap left by the absence of school lunches.
Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, Director of Feeding America, expressed excitement about the program’s launch, highlighting its potential to alleviate food insecurity among families during the summer months. The Albertsons Companies Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors program, alongside an advisory group comprising leaders from various sectors, will work to maximize the program’s impact in its inaugural year. Anne Filipic, Executive Director of Share Our Strength, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring every child in America has access to nutritious food.
The initiative adopts a comprehensive approach, leveraging online and community outreach to empower parents and caregivers with information about the program. A new website, SummerEBT.org, simplifies eligibility checks and facilitates enrollment in participating states, while also directing families in non-participating states to alternative food resources. This concerted effort seeks to address the pervasive issue of childhood hunger and lay the groundwork for broader participation in the future.
