Ahold Delhaize Appoints Stephane Deutsch as Brand President of Super Indo

Ahold Delhaize has announced the appointment of Stephane Deutsch as the new Brand President of Super Indo, with the leadership transition set to take effect on June 22. The announcement marks a significant leadership change for the Indonesian grocery retailer as the company continues to strengthen its position in the highly competitive Southeast Asian food retail market. Deutsch’s appointment follows the decision of Boudewijn van Nieuwenhuijzen to leave the organization and pursue a new professional opportunity outside the Ahold Delhaize group. The transition represents a new chapter for Super Indo as the brand focuses on growth, innovation, and strengthening its omnichannel retail capabilities in Indonesia.

Leadership Transition at Super Indo

The appointment of Stephane Deutsch comes at a time when Super Indo is looking to accelerate its growth strategy while maintaining a strong focus on customers and communities. The retailer has built a reputation as a trusted supermarket chain serving millions of customers across Indonesia with a wide range of fresh food, groceries, and everyday essentials. With changing consumer behaviors and rapid digital transformation across the retail sector, leadership plays a crucial role in guiding organizations toward sustainable growth and innovation.

Stephane Deutsch’s arrival signals a strategic move by Ahold Delhaize to further strengthen Super Indo’s leadership team. As the retail landscape evolves with increasing digital adoption and competition, experienced leaders who understand both physical retail operations and digital commerce are becoming increasingly important. Deutsch’s experience in managing complex retail operations across multiple regions makes him well positioned to lead the brand into its next phase.

Stephane Deutsch’s Global Retail Experience

Before joining Super Indo, Stephane Deutsch served as Chief Financial Officer for Egypt at TotalEnergies Marketing Egypt. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing financial strategy and operational performance within the company’s Egyptian market operations. His experience in financial leadership complements his extensive background in retail management, giving him a strong foundation in both operational and financial aspects of business leadership.

Over the course of his career, Deutsch has gained significant international experience by working in diverse markets across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. One of his notable roles was serving as Chief Executive Officer of SPAR International in the United Arab Emirates. During his tenure there, he was responsible for managing the expansion and operational development of the SPAR brand within the region.

Deutsch also previously served as President Director of PT Hero Supermarket Tbk in Indonesia. This role provided him with direct experience in the Indonesian retail market, one of the fastest-growing consumer markets in Southeast Asia. His time leading PT Hero allowed him to develop a deep understanding of local consumer behavior, supply chain dynamics, and the operational challenges unique to Indonesia’s retail environment.

In addition, Deutsch held leadership positions as Chief Executive Officer of Carrefour Malaysia & Singapore, where he oversaw operations in two key Southeast Asian markets. These roles strengthened his expertise in large-scale retail operations and further developed his ability to lead multicultural teams across complex market environments.

Early Career and Long Tenure with Carrefour

Stephane Deutsch began his professional career with the global retail giant Carrefour. During his 23-year tenure with the company, he held multiple leadership roles across various functions and markets. His long association with Carrefour helped shape his retail leadership style and provided him with extensive experience in store operations, merchandising, supply chain management, and international retail strategy.

Working with one of the world’s largest supermarket operators allowed Deutsch to gain insights into global retail trends and operational excellence. Over the years, he developed expertise in driving growth strategies, managing large retail networks, and adapting global retail models to local market conditions.

This combination of international exposure and operational experience has made him a respected leader within the retail industry. His background in both established and emerging markets will be valuable as Super Indo continues to expand and innovate within Indonesia’s rapidly evolving retail sector.

He also highlighted Super Indo’s strong brand identity, trusted reputation among customers, and its commitment to serving communities across the country.

According to Deutsch, one of the key priorities for the brand moving forward will be strengthening its omnichannel capabilities. The integration of physical stores with digital platforms has become a critical component of modern retail strategy. By enhancing online services while maintaining strong in-store experiences, Super Indo aims to provide customers with greater convenience and flexibility.

Deutsch also stressed the importance of sustainable growth and ensuring that customer needs remain at the center of every business decision. His leadership approach focuses on collaboration with employees, partners, and customers to drive innovation and long-term success.

Recognizing the Contributions of Boudewijn van Nieuwenhuijzen

As the leadership transition takes place, Ahold Delhaize also acknowledged the significant contributions of Boudewijn van Nieuwenhuijzen during his time with the company. Van Nieuwenhuijzen has had a long and distinguished career within the Ahold Delhaize organization.

He originally joined the company in 2001 and held multiple leadership roles across both operations and commercial functions. His career within the organization allowed him to gain deep experience in retail management and strategic leadership.

In 2018, he returned to Ahold Delhaize as Vice President of Commerce at Etos. His work in this role focused on strengthening the company’s commercial operations and enhancing customer engagement.

Leadership at Super Indo

Before becoming Brand President of Super Indo in 2023, Boudewijn van Nieuwenhuijzen served as Vice President of Operations at the company. In this role, he played a critical role in improving operational efficiency and strengthening the brand’s store network across Indonesia.

When he stepped into the role of Brand President, he continued to focus on strengthening the company’s customer-centric approach. Under his leadership, Super Indo worked to enhance its service offerings, strengthen relationships with local communities, and navigate the challenges of operating in a competitive retail market.

Van Nieuwenhuijzen’s leadership also helped the company maintain momentum during a period of market uncertainty and rapid change within the retail sector. His efforts helped build a solid operational foundation that will support the company’s future growth.

Looking Ahead for Super Indo

The appointment of Stephane Deutsch as Brand President represents an important step in Super Indo’s long-term growth strategy. With a strong foundation built by previous leadership and the backing of Ahold Delhaize, the company is well positioned to continue expanding its presence in Indonesia’s retail sector.

Indonesia remains one of the most dynamic consumer markets in Southeast Asia, with a growing middle class, increasing urbanization, and rising demand for modern retail experiences. Super Indo aims to leverage these opportunities by enhancing its store network, improving digital capabilities, and strengthening customer engagement.

Under Deutsch’s leadership, the company is expected to focus on accelerating omnichannel development, improving operational efficiency, and driving sustainable growth. By combining international retail expertise with local market knowledge, Super Indo hopes to deliver greater value to customers while maintaining its strong community-focused identity.
