Southeastern Grocers Celebrates Black History Month with Annual Grant Program

Southeastern Grocers Inc. (SEG), the parent company behind Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, alongside the SEG Gives Foundation, is marking Black History Month by honoring the contributions of its associates and local community members. The company remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering belonging, inclusion, and diversity, which it actively champions through various initiatives. This includes the launch of its highly anticipated annual grant program, aimed at building meaningful partnerships and empowering diverse communities across the Southeastern United States.

The Romay Davis Belonging, Inclusion and Diversity Grant

This February, SEG is inviting nonprofit organizations throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi to apply for the 2025 Romay Davis Belonging, Inclusion, and Diversity Grant. This grant is designed to support organizations that are addressing racial disparities in critical areas such as healthcare, food insecurity, and education. Through this program, SEG hopes to contribute to the creation of a more inclusive and equitable future for all by empowering organizations that are working toward these common goals.

Nonprofits based in the grocer’s five-state operating area are encouraged to apply for the grant, which offers funding ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. Applications are being accepted until August 31 at www.seggives.com/grantapp. The grant program is a vital tool for SEG, as it enables the company to partner with organizations that have a tangible and lasting impact on their communities.

Supporting Communities Through the Years

The Romay Davis Belonging, Inclusion, and Diversity Grant has had a profound impact since its inception in 2020. In 2024 alone, the program provided a total of $487,500 in grants to 50 organizations. These nonprofits include regional food banks, tutoring and afterschool programs, women’s health resources, environmental learning seminars, and others focused on addressing the needs of diverse communities. In total, the grant program has awarded nearly $1.6 million in funding to deserving organizations across the Southeast.

One of the key aspects of the program is its focus on organizations that work to combat racial inequality, particularly in areas where marginalized communities are most affected. By providing financial support to such groups, SEG is able to help facilitate projects that are crucial in bridging gaps in healthcare access, education, and access to nutritious food.

The legacy of the grant’s namesake, Ms. Romay Davis, is integral to its mission. A remarkable woman, Davis was a WWII veteran who served in the first all-Black Women’s Army Corps unit. She was a passionate advocate for social justice and dedicated much of her life to community service. Her 104 years were marked by a commitment to making the world a better place, and SEG is proud to continue her work by supporting organizations that embody the same values she held dear.

A Tribute to Ms. Romay Davis

Ms. Romay Davis’s life and legacy are a constant inspiration to those who work with SEG. As a member of the U.S. Army’s 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, she made history as part of the only all-Black Women’s Army Corps unit deployed overseas during World War II. The 6888th cleared a backlog of more than two years’ worth of mail in just three months, restoring communication between military personnel and their families and boosting morale during the final months of the war.

Her accomplishments didn’t end with her military service. Davis went on to earn multiple degrees from New York University, worked as a fashion designer and model, and achieved a Black Belt in Taekwondo. She was later honored with the Congressional Gold Medal for her contributions to the war effort and her lifelong dedication to public service. In her later years, Davis joined Winn-Dixie as an associate in Montgomery, Alabama, where she continued to serve her community.

Davis’s legacy endures even after her passing on June 21, 2024. Her life continues to inspire countless individuals to pursue greatness and to uplift those around them. The Romay Davis Belonging, Inclusion, and Diversity Grant is a tribute to her vision, resilience, and tireless advocacy for social change.

A Commitment to Community

SEG’s commitment to community engagement extends beyond the grant program. Recently, the company partnered with the American Red Cross for a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The event, part of the Red Cross’s Sound the Alarm initiative, aimed to protect underserved communities from the devastating effects of home fires. SEG associates, along with members of Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, assisted in installing free fire alarms and sharing critical safety information with local residents. This partnership exemplifies SEG’s ongoing efforts to support the well-being of its neighbors and continue Dr. King’s legacy of community service and advocacy.

Recognition for Workplace Diversity and Inclusion

SEG is not only focused on supporting its external communities but also takes pride in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for its associates. In 2024, the company received widespread recognition for its commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
