Amazon Expands to South Africa with New Online Store

US-based e-commerce giant Amazon has unveiled its expansion into South Africa with the launch of a dedicated online shopping platform, Amazon.co.za.

The newly introduced site grants South African consumers access to a diverse array of products spanning 20 categories, featuring both international and local brands. Renowned global names like HP, Apple, Sony, and Maybelline share space with homegrown South African sellers such as Masodi, Amanda-Jayne, and King Kong Leather.

Accessible through the Amazon shopping app and various web browsers on desktop and mobile devices, Amazon.co.za offers swift delivery options, including same-day and next-day services, with order tracking facilitated through WhatsApp. Additionally, customers benefit from a hassle-free 30-day return policy, with options for home pickup or self-drop.

To enhance customer satisfaction, Amazon provides multiple avenues for customer support, including email, phone, and live chat. South African shoppers are treated to complimentary delivery on their first orders and subsequent purchases exceeding R500 ($27).

Amazon.co.za extends support to independent sellers in South Africa, offering easy onboarding tools, payment processing solutions, and promotional features. The platform is designed to accommodate businesses of all scales.

Robert Koen, Managing Director of Amazon sub-Saharan Africa, expressed enthusiasm about the launch, highlighting the platform’s value proposition, expansive selection, and seamless delivery experience. He emphasized Amazon.co.za’s commitment to providing customers with stress-free shopping, efficient delivery, extensive pickup options, round-the-clock customer support, and hassle-free returns.

In a move toward community engagement, Amazon has forged a partnership with local non-profit organization goGOGOgo. This collaboration enables customers to receive eligible products in handmade gift bags, with goGOGOgo focused on empowering grandmothers, locally known as GOGOs, through skill-building initiatives.

Meanwhile, in April 2024, Amazon announced plans for a drone delivery service launch in Arizona, USA, later in the year, underscoring the company’s ongoing efforts to innovate and enhance its services globally.
