Southeastern Grocers Affirms Commitment to Pollinators During National Pollinator Month

Southeastern Grocers Inc. (SEG), the parent company of Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, is reaffirming its commitment to pollinator health during National Pollinator Month. The company is spotlighting L&M, its Fresh Supplier of the Year, for their proactive measures in safeguarding these essential members of our ecosystem.

Animal pollinators, including bees, butterflies, birds, and bats, play a crucial role in our food chain, contributing to one out of every three bites of food we consume, as noted by the USDA. To protect these vital pollinators, SEG has implemented a robust pollinator policy. This includes collaborating with suppliers and community organizations to promote pollinator-friendly practices, such as avoiding harmful pesticides and sourcing produce from suppliers with verified integrated pest management practices. SEG also encourages its partners to obtain pollinator-friendly certifications and educates consumers about the importance of pollinator health. Additionally, the company is increasing its offerings of USDA Organic produce in stores.

Dewayne Rabon, Chief Merchandising Officer at Southeastern Grocers, emphasized the company’s commitment, stating, “Our responsibility goes beyond store aisles. We recognize that the health of our food supply chain is intricately linked to the well-being of pollinators. Through partnerships with dedicated suppliers like L&M, we are taking meaningful steps to support sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. By prioritizing pollinator-friendly practices, we are not only securing our food systems but also contributing to the resilience and sustainability of our communities.”

Supplier Partner Spotlight: L&M

L&M, a long-standing partner of SEG, shares a commitment to sustainability and pollinator conservation. The company has eliminated the use of harmful pesticides and established bee sanctuaries on its ranches to protect bee populations. L&M is collaborating with the USDA to create additional pollinator habitats, scheduled to launch soon, further demonstrating its dedication to sustainable farming practices.

SEG’s support extends beyond its suppliers. The company donated $10,000 to the University of North Florida Ogier Gardens to promote pollinator-friendly environments and sustainability initiatives. Throughout the year, SEG supports local nonprofits, including Earth Day initiatives like planting pollinator gardens and promoting environmental education.

SEG remains steadfast in its advocacy for pollinator health beyond National Pollinator Month. Through ongoing partnerships, sustainable practices, and community initiatives, SEG aims to protect these essential species, promote environmental stewardship, and ensure long-term food security.
