Mattel Aims for 80% Colorblind Access in Global Games by 2024

Mattel is making significant strides towards inclusivity by ensuring that 80% of its global games portfolio will be colorblind accessible by the end of 2024, increasing to 90% by 2025. This commitment extends across beloved games like UNO®, Phase 10®, DOS™, Blokus®, and Tumblin’ Monkeys®. Recognizing the challenges faced by approximately 300 million colorblind individuals worldwide, Mattel consulted experts and individuals with color vision deficiency, including their own designers, to implement solutions such as patterns, tactile clues, and symbols to enhance gameplay accessibility. This effort builds on their pioneering work with UNO ColorADD in 2017, designed specifically for the colorblind community.

Ray Adler, Mattel’s Vice President of Global Games, emphasized their dedication to inclusivity, stating, “At Mattel, we are proud to offer more colorblind accessible games, fostering universal gameplay and spreading awareness for the colorblind community.”

In celebration of this initiative, Mattel Games will donate colorblind accessible games to YMCA summer camps across the U.S., promoting inclusive play experiences. Mason Williams, Mattel’s Global Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, highlighted their broader commitment to creating products that reflect diversity and positive social impact.

This announcement coincides with Mattel Play It Forward Global Volunteer Week, reinforcing their commitment to community engagement. During this week, Mattel Games will donate GIANT UNO decks and Tumblin’ Monkeys games featuring updated colorblind accessible features to local communities.

Additionally, Mattel163, in partnership with NetEase, will integrate colorblind identification into mobile versions of popular card games like UNO! Mobile and Phase 10 Mobile through ‘Beyond Colors’ decks, enhancing accessibility for over 300 million users worldwide.
